Dentistry By Design
How can aerospace technology improve dental efficiency and effectiveness? Just ask the experts at Georgia Tech Research Institute. They have worked to enhance the patented dent/AART technology, hence dentistry by design
Experts in aerospace engineering have collaborated with an Atlanta dentist and a Florida orthodontist to achieve this. GTRI has developed a digital version of dent/AART that produces an accurate 3 D image of the patient's mouth.
Measurements from three high resolution x-rays or CT scan can be fed into a computer and the precise 3 D image is produced.
Based on the 360 degree image, a dentist can plan and test treatments virtually on the computer. Results are accurate treatment and perfect fit of dental appliances on the first try.
GTRI launched a Dental Tech Center in 2001 and continue to develop new technology, such as an air abrasion instrument to remove minor decay and spray a sealant on the tooth.
Future projects are aimed at creating stronger, sleeker instruments and ergonomic dental chairs. The use of aerospace technology will increase the efficiency and effectiveness of dental treatment. The happy result is to make dental care more affordable to many people.
