Pediatric Dentistry
Do babies and young children really need to go to a dentist? Yes indeed, children should have their first dental visit at around one year of age. Ideally, they should see a pediatric dentist.
Why not use your own dentist? Pediatric dentistry is a recognized specialty. Pediatric dentists, in order to be certified must complete years post graduate work. This focuses on child psychology and dental problems that may be encountered dealing with children.
Baby teeth should be cleaned as soon as they erupt using a soft washcloth or piece of gauze. Once the baby has two or more teeth a soft, child size toothbrush may be introduced. While children are not often the easiest patients, the skilled dentist will put them right at ease.
It's never too early to begin good dental habits. At a first visit your dentist will discuss such things as cleaning baby teeth, pacifier use, and thumb sucking. They will also counsel the parents about diet and excess sugar consumption and how they contribute to cavities.
Most dental offices catering to children have smaller size chairs and instruments. They often provide coloring books, stickers, and toys as rewards and to educate the child in good dental hygiene. Our dentist gave gift certificates to a local ice cream parlor for a no cavities check up.
Some offices allow parents to accompany a small child and others prefer to see the child alone to develop a relationship. Sedation is available for the very fearful child. Every effort is made to ensure the dental visits will be a pleasant experience. Children are often allowed to see, touch, and operate the equipment before it is used.
When a child is approaching adolescence, the dentist is aware of how important appearance has become to the child. They can discuss braces, cosmetic dentistry, tobacco use, and oral piercings. A teen is probably more likely to listen to a professional on these subjects than to their parents.
A pediatric dentist may also be a wise choice for the mentally challenged patient even if they are adults. The additional training they receive makes them better able to handle ADHD and autistic patients as well.
Check out the pediatric dentists in your area and start your child on a lifetime of good dental habits.
