Dentistry Programs Around The World & How To Successfully Complete It

The field of dentistry practices around the world varies, regardless of training and standards implemented.

dentistry

In the US, dentistry is mainly practiced by dentists who have finished a post-graduate degree in education. In some rural communities in Alaska, dental therapists are not allowed to practice dentistry in major American cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Detroit. This is due to the American Dental Association’s (ADA) opposition in allowing dental hygienists, health aids and therapists to practice their routine fillings. The opposition resulted to high quality dental treatment of health care programs covering dentistry services.

The opportunities for dental education in America remained limited. As of 2003, only 4,500 graduated with a degree in dentistry. According to ADA, there was no movement stating the expansion of dental education. The reduction of students pursuing dental education is due to the overpriced hands-on training services that are not administered by the government.

Dentists can either earn a degree in Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS). Both programs have no differences when it comes to training and they are endorsed by all dentistry state boards. There are 57 dental schools in the US requiring four years of completion in post-graduate studies (except in the University of Pacific wherein the completion is within three years).

In Australia, the field of dentistry is overseen by the Australian Dental Board (ADB) and Australian Dental Council (ADC). Its specialization meanwhile is overseen by the Australian Royal College of Dental Surgeons. Here, dentistry professionals must submit requirements prior to completing their 4-year training (full-time) in dental education. If a dentist wants to specialize, he/she must complete two years of formal studies in clinical education.

As of July 2010, the requirements for practicing dentistry in Australia became stricter. Dentistry graduates or professionals must obtain a license by registering at the Australian Dental Board. Generally, the board prioritizes dentists who have completed a degree in dental education from accredited universities around Australia and New Zealand. The registration for ADB license is not granted to dentistry graduates from outside Australia unless if he/she passed the ADC examinations prior to 2-year completion in advance dental health.

The Universities of Queensland, Adelaide, La Trobe and Western Australia offer 5-year undergraduate degree in dentistry. The University of Sydney meanwhile offers a 4-year entry program in dental education. In 2011, the University of Melbourne included dentistry in their 4-year courses. Admissions in these universities for dentistry completion are believed to be more intricate for applicants. According to ADB and ADC, only 5% of qualified applicants are admitted in dental schools yearly.

Dentistry in Canada is generally overseen by the Canadian National Dental Examining Board, while its specialization is overseen by the Canadian Royal College of Dentists. The country has currently 17,000 dentists. The field of dentistry in Canada is not publicly administered by health care providers but in some provinces, they give free dental care services for children and senior citizens.

In United Kingdom, dentists are required to complete five years of dentistry undergraduate programs before earning their BcHD and BDS degree. Fresh graduates from various dental schools in Britain will immediately undergo 2-year vocational training before qualifying for National Health Service licensure.

Completing a dentistry program may be cutthroat at times – True, since it requires systematic treatment, diagnosis and a lot of dedication. Before applying to a dentistry school, it’s necessary that you must determine first if this field is the right one for you. Scrutinize the training requirements and educational opportunities the program can offer you beyond its general scope.

As much as possible, ask yourself these questions:

• Is excelling in the field of dentistry your childhood dream?

• Are you into a career that requires variety and challenge?

• Do you possess an exceptional dexterity and spatial judgment skills?

• Would you consider yourself being “self-employed”?

• Are you concerned about maintaining or improving people’s oral health?

• Do you have a strong interest in health, science or other related fields?

The scope of dentistry is becoming much broader than before. Many dentistry professionals, dentists in particular, do more than just filling and drilling their patient’s teeth. Nowadays, they’re performing a variety of advanced functions and procedures. Although some dentists are developing their expertise over specific areas of dentistry, the range of dental services continues to grow steadily.

Dentistry is generally a scientific profession, but it can also be an artistic one. Dentists must have the same aesthetic sensibilities as that of an artist. Meaning, he/she must have a keen eye for detail and well-skilled dexterity in performing specific dental procedures.

Preparing for dentistry school is not that easy. It takes a lot of tough decisions so as much as possible, talk to your school’s guidance or career counselor about the preparatory studies you need to go through before entering a dental school. Also, talk to your dentist and other dentistry professionals since they can possibly give you an opportunity to see what it’s like to be in this field.

In pre-admission requirements, there are certain pre-dental education programs you need to complete first. These programs are mostly covered by mathematics and sciences, except in physics and biology since they’re not applicable in dentistry practice. The pre-admission requirements in various dental schools vary, so it’s very important to contact each school first to find out the specific requirements you need.

Admission to any dental school requires Dental Aptitude Test (DAT), which is administered by dental associations around the world. The DAT is done to evaluate the applicant’s academic ability, general comprehension of any methodical information applicable in dentistry, manual dexterity and visual perception. In Canada, all of its dental schools are requiring applicants to submit their DAT scores upon admission.

Completing a dentistry program also requires an enormous time and financial commitment. You will spend at least five years at dental school so choosing the right one for you matters. Do a lot of research on the best colleges and universities offering dental education courses.
